AACHE Mission and Conference Purpose
The purpose of the Arizona Association of Chicanos for Higher Education is to provide a forum for the discussion of issues related to Chicanas/os in higher education and to cooperate in providing workable solutions to these issues.
The year 1999 marks the 30th anniversary of the rise and continuous struggle by Chicanos and Chicanas in Arizona for access to higher education at the college and university level. With this in mind, the Sixteenth Annual Conference of the Arizona Association of Chicanos for Higher Education (AACHE) represents an opportunity for us to consider such an achievement and have a constructive discussion with the participation of all Chicano/Latino sectors (students, professors, and community), all regions, and the two current generations key to the struggle for access to higher education.

Conference Dedication
Gricelda Zamora González
(24 October 1985 - 18 March 1999)
Death of Gricelda Zamora González a Public Policy Issue.
The death of Gricelda Zamora González, a sixth grader who lived in the greater Phoenix area, remains an unresolved public policy issue. The medical training and cultural attitudes of Arizona physicians are of concern to the Arizona Association of Chicanos for Higher Education (AACHE). The Arizona Board of Medical Examiners has not adequately explained the circumstances of her death. It is unconscionable that no one was held accountable for Gricelda Zamora González's death of a ruptured appendix. We call upon Governor Jane Dee Hull, Arizona Attorney General Janet Napolitano, and the Arizona Legislature to reopen the Zamora González case because knowledgeable professionals believe that the investigation was superficial. Because Gricelda Zamora González's death is viewed as institutional racism, in the interest of social justice, open hearings should be held on this case.
Sincerely,
Ernesto Gonzales Escobedo,
Manuel de Jesús Hernández-G.

Sixteenth Annual Conference

"Thirty Years of Conciencia Chicana: Del Barrioa la University"
The year 1999 marks the 30th anniversary of the rise and continuous
struggle by Chicanos and Chicanas in Arizona for access to higher education
at the college and university level. With this in mind, the Sixteenth Annual
Conference of the Arizona Association of Chicanos for Higher Education
(AACHE) represents an opportunity for us to consider such an achievement
and have a constructive discussion with the participation of all Chicano/Latino
sectors (students, professors, and community), all regions, and the two
current generations key to the struggle for access to higher education.
In these times of several critical issues (language, education, immigration,
gender, sexuality, political representation), we urgently need, and must
have, a review of past goals and current programs: effectiveness, success,
and failure. We must also develop future plans which will insure access
to higher education on the part of those Chicanas(os)/Latinas(os) who today
are in primary and secondary schools. They the children need bold, creative,
and effective leadership from ACCHE and its supporters.
