ANNOUCEMENT
AACHE 25TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE POSTER SESSIONS
From Jose E. Nanez, Sr., AACHE Conference Planning Committee Chair; AACHE President-Elect.
Dear Friends,
AACHE is holding poster sessions at its 25th Annual Conference to be held in La Sala Ballroom at ASU at the West Campus. The conference date is Friday, October 10, 2008, 7:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Posters are solicited for the following 3 broad categories:
·
o 1. Scholarly & Creativity: Research, including laboratory or applied research projects (e.g. I will be creating posters for research I am conducting in my Cognitive and Vision Science Lab and my Bilingualism and Psycholinguistics Lab at ASU). Creative research projects (e.g., art, photography, writing, visual media). I encourage faculty and researchers at the state universities and community colleges or in private research institutions to construct a poster(s) high lighting their research/creative endeavors, especially if it concerns Latino topics. However, I also strongly encourage research/creative posters on any topic if Latino researchers/artists or students are involved in the project (e.g., research at ASU-UA medical school such as the Osler Summer Institute; UA Telemedicine Program; Schools of Nursing, etc.).
o 2. Laboratories, Departments, Centers, Colleges & Schools: For example, I am putting together a poster with information regarding my Cognitive and Vision Science Laboratory and my Bilingualism and Psycholinguistics Laboratory. Includes informational posters for examples: Academic Departments (e.g., Chicano/Latino Studies Departments; Mexican American Studies Departments); Centers and institutes like the Hispanic Research Center or Mexican American Studies Center. College and School programs focused on Latino education (e.g., Mexico, Border Studies).
o 3. Organizations, Institutes, & Foundations: Vice Presidents or other offices focused on Latino Education, for example ASU VP University-School Partnerships; ASU Office of the VP for University Student Initiatives. These organizations should create a poster on themselves. They should also create posters on the Latino-focus programs that they house and administer, e.g., Cesar Chavez Leadership Institute; Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs; Center for Community Development and Civil Rights; Chicanos Por La Causa; Valle del Sol, Helios Foundation, Friendly House, ALAC, etc. Student organizations at the state universities and community colleges, for example: MEChA, Latino Student Union, Hispanic Honors Society, SHIP, others. Latino Fraternities and Sororities. Community-focused Educational Institutes and Programs, for example, AGUILA; Projecto Manzana; Drug and Family Awareness Program/Fiesta Mexicana, and other programs focused on keeping Latino students in school through high school graduation and increasing the number of Latino high school students that enroll in colleges and universities. University/College-Community Partnership programs, for example the ASU-AGUILA Hispanic Youth Institute. Similar projects at the other state universities and community colleges.
· Please note that this list is not complete. Feel free to submit a poster even if I left your area off the list above. THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT THE POSTER SESSION SERVE TO HIGH LIGHT LATINO RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES; COMMUNITY PROJECTS, ORGANIZATIONS, INSTITUTES; STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS; EDUCATIONAL OFFICES/DEPARTMENTS AND INSTITUTES, ETC. WE ARE A VIBRANT LATINO COMMUNITY IN ARIZONA. LET’S COME TOGETHER AT THE AACHE CONFERENCE AND CELEBRATE OUR SUCCESS TO OURSELVES, OUR STUDENTS, AND OUR COMMUNITY. I also apologize for having the examples above lean heavily toward ASU and the Phoenix metro area. This is simply because the poster committee consisted oF one person – me. No one stepped forward to help, so by default, the examples represent the areas that I am most familiar with.
POSTERS
Requirements:
· Posters should be no larger than 3 x 5 feet in height and with respectively.
· Posters will be pinned on the walls of the La Sala Ballroom; bring your own T-pins. I don’t think push pins will work, so bring both types of pins if you wish, but T-pins for sure.
· For planning purposes: Please RSVP to me jnanezsr@asu.edu or Eva Fatigoni eva.fatigoni@asu.edu with your intent to submit a poster. Researchers/Creative Artists, if you are submitting more than one poster, please let me or Eva know how many you plan to submit.
· For planning purposes: Please include the type of poster/s you plan to submit. For example, researchers/Creative Artists may want to submit a poster(s) on their research/creative activities and one on their laboratory (as I plan to do) or their studio, gallery or shop.
· A representative(s) from each poster group must be present at the poster during the lunch hour (12-1:00) for the purpose of answering questions, describing the research/creative projects and providing information to conference attendees who come to view the posters and want to talk with the authors or organization representatives.
Suggestions:
· You can use Power Point to create your poster and save it in pdf format and take it to Kinkos or your organization’ print center. They will print it on glossy or flat paper roll. The rolls come in standard 3 feet height. Remember that the limit for poster length is 5 feet.
· Or, you can put your poster in Power Point, Word or other format and print individual pages. You can glue the pages against colored background pages for high lighting and then glue both the text pages and background pages to a poster board or card board backing. You can then use the T-pins to secure the poster to the exhibit wall.
· The posters will be up all day for viewing. Please remember that a rep(s) from each poster must be present in front of their poster(s) from 12:00-1:00.
· Some conference attendees may be interested in contacting you or your group but may not be able to come talk with you during the authors-present time (12:00-1:00). I recommend that you include your contact information (phone and fax number, facility address and web link, as well as your contact person’s name, title, and email address.
NOTE: The examples of a lab/organization/department/college, etc.-type poster (CVSLposterupdated…) and of a research-type poster are attached FYI. Please feel free to <<CVSLposterupdated1.ppt>> <<generic_HSC_template_Windows.ppt>> use them to prepare your posters. Also, if these don’t meet your needs, please feel free to make your posters in your own format, as long as you adhere to the poster requirements listed above. SEE YOU AT THE CONFERENCE.
